About this church

Westminster Abbey holds a unique place at the heart of UK national life. It is one of the world’s greatest churches, a designated World Heritage Site and ‘Royal Peculiar’, which means the Dean is directly answerable to the monarch. The coronation of kings and queens has taken place here since 1066, and many of the nation’s kings and queens are buried in the Abbey. Principal among them is St Edward the Confessor, King of England from 1042 to 1066, whose shrine is at the heart of the Abbey. Also buried or memorialised here are over 3,000 of the most famous and notable men and women from almost every century of these islands’ history: statesmen and politicians, lawyers, warriors, clerics, writers, artists, and musicians.

Westminster Abbey is a living church, part of the Church of England: where almighty God is worshipped daily, continuing a 1400-year tradition in this place. Every day (except Good Friday and Holy Saturday) the Eucharist is celebrated at 8.00 am. There are twenty-eight services every week, which all are welcome to attend, whether you are Anglican (Episcopalian), or of another Christian Church or of another faith, or seeking or doubting. It also plays host to a large number of national services of commemoration, dedication, and celebration.

About the choir

The Choir of Westminster Abbey is renowned worldwide as one of the finest choirs of its type. Comprising some 30 boys (all of whom attend the Abbey's dedicated residential Choir School) and 12 professional adult singers (known as Lay Vicars), the Choir plays a central role both in the daily choral services in the Abbey and in the many royal, state and national occasions which take place there.

In addition to fulfilling its responsibilities in Westminster, the Choir undertakes an extensive programme of broadcasts, recordings, concerts and tours, travelling in recent years to Australia, the Far East, the United States, Russia, Hungary and Spain. In June 2012 the Choir was invited by Pope Benedict to sing with the Sistine Chapel Choir at the Papal Mass for the Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul in St Peter's Basilica, Rome, and autumn 2014 saw another major tour of the USA, including performances in Washington DC, Dallas and New York. Closer to home, the Choir gives regular concerts in the Abbey and has appeared at many major festivals including the Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music and the BBC Proms.

The Choir of Westminster Abbey’s celebrated series of recordings for Hyperion includes the complete Great Service by William Byrd, choral works by Edward Elgar, and the critically acclaimed Mary and Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey, chosen by Gramophone as a Critics' Choice.

During the choir's vacations, the Abbey welcomes visiting choirs to sing.
