St Oswald's Parish Church, Durham

Regular services

About this church

St Oswald’s is probably the oldest of Durham city’s parish churches. Pointers to a pre-Conquest foundation include the Anglo-Saxon sculptured stones discovered in the walls of the church and churchyard, the circular shape of the churchyard on the earliest maps, and, taken together with these, the dedication to St Oswald (7th-century Northumbrian warrior king).

About the choir

The choir at St Oswald’s leads our musical worship at the 11:00 Eucharist each Sunday. Sunday evening services are approximately fortnightly during term-time; please do check our website for specific dates. We are an RSCM-affiliated SATB choir, and we sing a wide variety of repertoire, from 16th-century anthems to pieces by living composers. The choir is non-auditioned, but frequently reaches exceptional standards of music-making, and enjoys joint events with other local church choirs, as well as occasional Cathedral visits.

Rehearsals take place on a Thursday evening, 19:30 - 21:00. We are always looking for new members; if you are interested, please contact the Director of Music, David Harris.
