Croydon Minster has a long and distinguished history. It is believed to have been founded in Saxon times, since there is a record of “a priest of Croydon” in 960, although the first record of a church building is in Domesday Book (1086). The church has had close links with the Archbishops of Canterbury who had a Palace in Croydon.
In its final medieval form, the Minster was mainly a Perpendicular-style structure, but this was severely damaged by fire in 1867, following which only the tower, south porch and outer walls remained. Under the direction of Sir George Gilbert Scott the church was rebuilt, incorporating the remains and essentially following the design of the medieval building, and was reconsecrated in 1870. It still contains several important monuments and fittings saved from the old church.
Designated a Minster in May 2011, we are a living, growing church. Our mission is to reach out and celebrate God’s unconditional love for the world with all people of our parish and with the wider community. Our aim is to become a centre for pilgrims seeking to connect with our local heritage and be a place where all, regardless of race, gender or sexuality, may encounter God.
The Organ
The church boasts a fine 4-manual organ by the celebrated 19th century organ-builder William Hill, and has a distinguished track record of sending young organists to Oxbridge and music colleges. Recently, we have provided organ scholars for both King's College and St John's College, Cambridge.

The Music Department is led by Justin Miller (Director of Music).
The Minster provides young singers with a unique musical education and gives adults of all abilities the opportunity to sing the finest works of the sacred choral repertoire. In recent years, the choirs have performed with the London Mozart Players and the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble, and strong links exist between the music department and the Parish Church Schools and the schools of the Whitgift Foundation. Croydon Minster is an associate member of the Choir Schools’ Association
Choristers
Croydon Minster has flourishing choirs of boy and girl choristers. The choirs rehearse and perform separately, coming together for special services and concerts throughout the year.
Boys continue in the choir until their voices change and girls remain in the girls’ choir up to the age of 18. Boys with broken or changed voices are referred to as Choral Scholars.
Joining the Minster Choirs
The choirs of Croydon Minster are open to singers of all religious backgrounds. Each choir has its own audition process and the Director of Music is always pleased to talk to prospective members. Please contact him at the Minster office on 020 8688 8104.
**NB: Be sure to check the music list link (left column of this page) before travelling to the church, as there can often be discrepancies between that and the times on the calendar below.**
