Other services
The annual candle-lit Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols takes place on the Sunday evening before Christmas and is one of the events which regularly sees the church packed to the rafters. Among other services with special music are the Service of Advent Light with Advent carols, and the Good Friday Liturgy with Victoria's setting of the St John Passion.
About this church
St Mary the Virgin is the historic parish church of Wimbledon, now a part of the Wimbledon Team Ministry.
We are proud to be one of the few parish churches in SW London that offers Choral Evensong according to the Book of Common Prayer most Sundays of the year (check our music list if making a special trip, to avoid disappointment).
At St Mary's we aim to provide space for those who are perhaps a bit more reserved; who like to contemplate; who find music an important part of worship; who like to be intellectually stimulated. We’re liberal in outlook but reasonably challenging and preach a social Gospel.
All are welcome to join us at any of our services.
About the choir
The music at our Sunday Eucharist (9:30am) and Evensong (6:30pm) is led by St Mary's Church Choir, an accomplished group of mixed voices who sing repertoire from the standard Anglican choral tradition - from Renaissance polyphony by Byrd and Palestrina to 20th and 21st century choral music by MacMillan and Chilcott.
The adult choir is made up of around 40 singers, and the focus of our activities is the Friday evening rehearsal, from 7:45pm until 9:15pm. During this rehearsal we prepare motets and mass settings for the 9:30am Eucharist on Sunday mornings, as well as other anthems and canticle settings for our weekly full Choral Evensong.
Membership
In addition to attending the Friday evening rehearsal, most choir members sing regularly for the Sunday morning Eucharist. Some sing at Evensong as well, at 6:30pm on Sunday evenings, and a few just at Evensong.
Junior Choir
We have a thriving Junior Choir of over 20 enthusiastic, sociable and able children (choristers) aged between 8 and 13. They meet weekly on Friday evenings, from 6:30-7:30pm. Additionally, they sing once per month at each of the 9:30am, 11:15am and 6:30pm services, covering a broad range of traditional and modern Anglican church music. In the last few years they have joined the adult choir on visits to sing evensong at St Paul's and Southwark Cathedrals.
They are directed by Colette Boushell. Anyone interested in joining should contact Max Barley (max@stmaryswimbledon.org).
