Besides evensong and Taizé-style evening prayer, the church has special services at Advent, Christmas, Passiontine and Easter, when full choral masses or liturgical performances are often sung.
The church is also available for concerts, and is the home of the 120-voice Streatham Choral.
About this church
Streatham's ancient parish church has been a place of worship since the Domesday Book. The medieval church, enlarged in the 1870s but incorporating monuments and memorials from the 14th-century onwards, was damaged by fire in 1975 but sensitively rebuilt and is now a large, open, stone-flagged space with wooden galleries on three sides.
There is a well-equipped two-manual Walker organ (1979), and a tower with a ring of eight bells.
About the choir
St Leonard's has an accomplished adult amateur SATB choir usually numbering around 20, which rehearses on Thursday evenings. In addition to this, there are three or four choral scholarships available each year for sixth-form pupils or university or conservatoire students. In the past, the choir has contributed to festival concerts in Streatham, and has sung Choral Evensong in a number of Cathedrals as the visiting choir.
St Leonard’s also currently has around 25 choristers, who rehearse between 6pm and 7.15pm every Thursday during term time. The choristers join the adult choir to sing the 10am Eucharist on the first Sunday of every month. This musical training is free of charge and follows the Royal School of Church Music’s ‘Voice for Life’ programme.
On the first, third, fourth and fifth Sundays of the month we sing a full choral evensong. Hymns are usually from the English Hymnal and we follow the 1662 Prayer Book. The second Sunday of the month, a Taizé service is offered with an emphasis on simple chants and silent reflection. The Director of Music is Calum Fraser and the Organist is Travis Baker.
